Through Eyes of The Forgotten Majority

I am inspired heavily by music videos due to the lack of dialogue used to tell the visual story. I feel that with music videos so many elements are used in order to tell the story. Furthermore, the whole concept and theme of the song allows for endless interpretations, emotions and for a wide array of different stories in contrast to the visuals. As I feel music videos focus a lot on artistic modes of representation, this is something similar to what I want to create with my documentary. 

 

Therefore, I intend for the majority of the visuals such as costumes, mood lighting, mise-en-scene etc.. To tell the story and emotion of my documentary.This is also so it could be a visual experience for the audience also. There is one music artist who I believe supports this idea very well is FKA twigs. She often directs, produces, and creates the story as well as the music herself. FKA twigs is also considered very innovative, and this is something I hope for my documentary to be. Below are the examples of her work that I have been inspired by:

My idea of lighting style has been inspired heavily through neon lighting, and heavy and intense colours. (As seen in article here) and much like Martin Scorsese's use of red within his films.

I intend to create this look through using filtered lights and intense saturation during post-production (if it is needed). However, I believe this will be a challenge for me, as well as the pace of editing throughout the documentary.Therefore, I will create a soundscape/soundtrack throughout the documentary that will aid me to create a sophisticated level of pacing (CU video edit:n.d). As well as adding tension within the documentary, even if the sound is subtle. 

 

As I plan to have other creative elements within my documentary such as sound instalments and still images. I have taken inspiration from the documentary 'Blue' directed by Derek Jarmans in 1993.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

During the sound instalments I plan to have a simple image on screen, which can represent what is being said, much like 'Blue'. I would like to experiment with some of the sounds within the documentary much like the film below. I can create this during post-production editing, through adding distorted effects and changing the EQ.
